Ottawa Savings Bank was founded on August 23, 1871, as Ottawa Building Homestead and Savings Association. This institution was the pioneer among all the building and loan associations in Illinois, which each year furnish hundreds of millions in funds to individuals to purchase homes. For over sixty-two years, since its organization in 1871, the association occupied offices on the second floor of the building at the northwest corner of LaSalle and Madison streets. During this time, the association formally changed its name to Ottawa Federal Savings and Loan Association. This change allowed Ottawa Federal to take advantage of federal legislation designed to aid and strengthen the savings and loan industry. Ottawa Federal moved from the location at 120 West Madison Street to its present location at 925 LaSalle Street in December 1959. The new location provided a modern structure with ample parking space and three convenient drive-up lanes. With the growth of the savings and loan, in 1980 an addition was built onto this structure, doubling its size. Remodeling this modern structure to be a replica of the 1870's was a major part of Ottawa Federal's 125th Anniversary Celebration, which was held in 1996. In keeping with Washington Park Square, which is directly across the street, the bank building was redesigned to match with other surrounding buildings, such as Reddick Mansion, Appellate Court, and churches of similar design. Washington Park is designated as a historical area because it was the scene of the first Lincoln-Douglas Debate. It is not often a new building is taken back over 100 years in time. Building materials had to be found that looked like they could have been used in 1850 without overburdening the present structure. This ambitious project started in the spring of 1996 and culminated with our Anniversary Celebration in August 1996. Now known as Ottawa Savings Bank the institution is operated by local area people that are involved in all phases of community service. The emphasis on local ownership and control is of tremendous significance to both borrowers and investors alike, and that friendly, family like atmosphere still pervades today. Following our conversion to a mutual holding company in July 2005 we continue to operate as a community oriented financial institution offering traditional financial services to consumers and businesses in our market area. Ottawa Savings Bank is a testament to the farsightedness of a group of Ottawan's who were local pioneers in this field and the State of Illinois. We are proud to be celebrating our 136th year..
